Free transit

AS202585 got its start on free transit from people who didn't have to offer it. If you run a personal network and need somewhere to announce your space, the rodeo will carry it for free.

Who it's for

  • Personal, hobby, and learning networks. No businesses, and no reselling.
  • You have your own public ASN and at least one IPv6 or IPv4 prefix.
  • You announce your own prefixes. Got downstreams of your own? Holler first and we'll talk it through.

What you get

  • A BGP session over IPv6, IPv4, or both.
  • A default route or the full table — your pick.
  • Your prefixes announced to our upstreams and at the IXPs we're on.
  • Your ASN added to our AS-SET, AS202585:AS-RODEO, so upstream and route server filters let your routes through.

How we connect

  • At an IXP we share. A session over the peering LAN, if the IXP allows transit across it. See the IXP list.
  • Over a tunnel. No shared IXP? We'll run a WireGuard or GRE tunnel to our router at Nikhef in Amsterdam.

House rules

Same as for peering, plus the filtering you'd expect from anyone carrying your routes:

  • Your prefixes need valid ROAs. We drop RPKI invalids on every session.
  • Your prefixes need route objects in an IRR. We only accept prefixes on your list.
  • Keep your PeeringDB profile up-to-date.
  • Only source traffic from your own prefixes. We filter spoofed traffic (BCP38).
  • Don't use it for abuse. Abuse ends the session.

The fine print

It's free, so it's best effort. There's no SLA and no bandwidth guarantee, and the ranch is run by one person in their spare time. If you're planning to push a lot of traffic, tell us up front. We can end the service with notice, or without it if a session is used for abuse.

Saddle up

Mail noc at bgp dot rodeo with your ASN, the prefixes you want to announce, whether you'd like a default route or the full table, and where you'd like to connect.

Need a server that speaks BGP instead? Greybull VPSes come with sessions to AS202585 out of the box.
